Thing 23...

Thing 23...

I cannot believe that this class is finally over. I started with the idea that I would breeze through many of the 23 things. I did have some background knowledge on several of them but some I had never utilized before and plan to do so now.

I have taken away many ideas from 23 things. I would like to use many of them as collaborative tools in the classroom. I think students may become more actively involved in projects if they are integrated with use of technology.

I cannot believe how much information and tools that are out there that I have never explored. There are so many ways to enhance learning through these tools. Podcasting was especially exciting to learn about because there are so many different ways I can have students use it. From creating my own study guides to sharing already created podcasts to reinforce or further explain concepts.

While completing this class I have come to realize that we need to integrate everyday learning with Internet tools much more frequently. The careers our students will have in the future will be collaborative and technology based.

This year I plan on incorporating many things I have learned in this class into my classroom. I have shared some ideas with the team I teach with and they would like to incorporate some of these ideas too. From student blogs to team wikis there are many Internet based ideas I would like to explore with students.

A wiki is very similar to a blog but a wiki seems to be a way to work together to create a tool with a specific end in mind. A blog (although it can be a collaborative tool)is more of one person's ideas. I liked using the wiki and found it very user friendly. I would like to use it in my classroom with students for group projects.

I have used Wikis before. It is important that people work together to create and share information in one place. Wikis allow people to do that. I would like to utilize Wikis in my language arts co-taught class. I enjoyed reading the Hanalee Book Wiki. This was a great way for students to collaborate on a project. A problem that may occur could be misinformation. I would have to be sure to proofread everything posted on the site by students to make sure it was accurate. In the end the students would be able to share what they learned with their group by accessing the wiki. I think this project would be time consuming but definately worth the knowledge and collaboration skills the students would learn in the end.

Thing 20 - PODCAST-

It didn't take me long to download itunes to my laptop. I already have it on my home computer and use it all the time but thought I should utilize it on my laptop as well so I can download podcasts I may want to use in school. I found search tools easy to use but stuck with using EPN so I would avoid any inappropriate content that I wouldn't want shown at school. I could spend hours searching podcasts because of the wide variety of topics there are to investigate. I really like the idea of making my own for students to use for study guides but also there is so much information out there it would be beneficial to share those with students too. The podcast I subscribed to was "Calculator Tips" from The Video Math Tutor. We use calculators in class and the podcast had a demonstration on basic features of using the calculator as well as some more advanced options.

I searched many different podcasts on the internet. I was looking for interesting podcasts about math. I found many great podcasts for college use. I would have liked to have utilized them when I was in college for help in math.

I like the fact that you can utilize them whenever needed and can acess them at home and at school. Our team could do a weekly podcast and include study guides for students to use.

I also co-teach some classes at school and am always looking for ways to reinforce concepts already taught. Podcasts will be a great help.

Slide Share will be a great way to introduce new concepts in the classroom as well as review prior knowledge. By using slide share you do not have to "recreate the wheel". You can view other's presentations and use those that are relevant to your teaching in your classroom. I found the site easy to use. I picked a slide show on linear equations.

I currenlty am teaching summer school math and I found this relevant to my subject matter.

The online productivity tool I found that I may use often in the future is the Flashcardb. I found this tool very easy to use. I would like to create study cards for students to use for vocabulary. This would work for my students in all core subject areas. I currenlty co-teach langueage, math, science, and social studies. I often create paper study guides for students to help review vocabulary. I could use this online tool and have students access the vocabulary and study on-line. They can test themselves! This worked very easily for math vocabulary terms that I entered. I did use the search feature and was sorry to see that some users have their flashcards marked as private. I would have liked the opportunity to have viewed some of the flashcards already made that had many of the math concepts (at least in the title) I was looking. I will definatley use this in the fall with my students.
